One Foot in the Future
Einstein’s apartment was a short walk from Maganhildi’s Restaurant. As Darden Poppin had said, Max and Ingrid Veidt had proved invaluable. Holmes easily found the address he had committed to memory. He didn’t have much time. Soon Vera Erikson would find Moriarty tied up in the kitchen and release him. At the most he had ten minutes.
Holmes climbed the three flights of stairs to Einstein’s apartment and knocked with some urgency on the door.
The door swung open. Einstein was dressed in the old sweater that would appear in so many photographs in later years. He sighed. “Mr. Holmes, you are becoming most tiresome. I thought I made it clear to you we have nothing more to say. As you seem not to respect my wishes, you leave me no choice but to call the authorities.”
Einstein left Holmes standing in the doorway and went to the telephone on the sideboard. He picked up the receiver and began to dial. Holmes approached the sideboard, followed the trail of the telephone wire and ripped it from the wall. The telephone went dead.
“I am sorry, Doctor, but I have little time. Professor Moriarty will be here any moment.”
Einstein hung up the receiver of the now useless telephone. “Moriarty? Who is Moriarty?”
“He is a criminal mastermind who has changed your life in ways you cannot comprehend.”
“Mr. Holmes, forgive me, but I am beginning to question your grip on reality.”
“I need you to listen to me carefully, Doctor. I will be brief. You recall our discussions after your kidnapping about wormholes?”
“Vaguely, but that was years ago.”
“Time will not allow me to go into specifics. Trust me when I tell you the wormhole is not a theory. An actual wormhole exists in Scotland and comes out here in Berlin. Professor Moriarty has used it, as have I and Dr. Watson, which accounts for the reason Dr. Watson and I appear to you as we did in 1921.”
Einstein opened the door to the sideboard and removed a bottle of Schnapps. He filled the glass to the brim. “Would you care for a drink, Mr. Holmes?”
“I haven’t time.”
“You haven’t time? Is that English humor, Mr. Holmes?”
“No, Doctor, this is not a laughing matter. Until I experienced travel through the portal itself, the wormhole was nothing but a theory. Intriguing, to be sure, but little more than a scientific fiction. I assure you the portal exists.”
“Were I to believe you, how can you be sure you can return?”
“H.G. Wells used it three years ago. Moriarty has used it several times. And I have used it twice. Each time one arrives within seconds of departing eighteen years later or eighteen years earlier.”
“And you wish me to return to London with you?”
“No, Doctor, if memory serves, you said yourself that is quite impossible. Time flows in only one direction.”
“Right,” Einstein said. “The ball on the tether.”
“Which is why someone from the present cannot accidentally stumble into the portal. For them the entrance to the portal does not exist.”
“So
